Joe Says "Write About Hockey"

Well, okay Joe!

If you've been reading this for any length of time, you know that I am a hockey fan and my team is the Washington Capitals.

When we decided to move to the Philadelphia region, I had to call our Account Rep at the Caps and tell her that we were not renewing our season tickets. She tried - briefly - to get us to change our minds, but ultimately she understood. Then she said, "But... you're not going to root for the Flyers, are you?"

I reassured her that we would remain Caps fans.

And we have! We even bought the cable package that enabled us to watch all the Caps games so that we could keep our boys close. When they finally won the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history, we yelled and danced and wept happy, happy tears.

Then came the long slide down from their championship ways. We had a glimmer of hope last year when the boys made the playoffs by winning the last game of the season, but the Rangers sweep in the first round dashed those hopes, alas!

The talking heads did not think that the Caps would do well this year; in fact, they doubted that the team would even make the playoffs.

They lost the first game of the season. Well, damn.

Then the team started winning. And winning some more. The great Alex Ovechkin was scoring every game, sometimes more than once. When he was 29 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's  goal scoring record, he broke his fibula. He'd be out four to six weeks. OH NO!

We held our breath, wondering if a fall was inevitable.

But! The Washington Capitals, in their 50th season, kept on winning. Ovi will likely return after the holiday break.

Hope is the thing with skates.
