Coffee, Tea, and Me

Day 13: Earl Grey

I suspected that today's marshmallow would be Earl Grey when I saw the pale slate-gray color. It was fine, very tea-ish.

I went through a tea phase in college. All the hippies drank tea, especially herbal teas like chamomile and peppermint. My tribe liked the Celestial Seasonings teas - Red Zinger and Sleepytime were particular favorites.

But I'm really not a tea person. I still like peppermint tea, but I pretty much like peppermint anything. I also like sweet tea, with the emphasis on the sweet, and green tea when I'm eating Asian food. Thai iced tea is good, but Thai iced coffee is better. I'm not really a much of a black tea aficionado.

I'm totally a coffee person. I come by it honestly. My Pop drank coffee at every meal, especially dinner. Hot coffee in winter, spring, and fall; iced coffee in summer before we had air conditioning. He never had any trouble sleeping, either.

I still remember my first cup of coffee. I was 13 and got snubbed by a girl I thought was my friend. When I got home my Mom could tell I was upset. "Sit down," she said. "Here, have a cup of coffee and tell me all about it." I was really surprised! But I drank some coffee, and talked it over with Mom, and felt better.

And thus was born a coffee lover.
