In addition to Make Way for Ducklings, my Realtor® surprised me with an old copy of Ivanhoe. This particular edition was given to my Mom on her birthday in 1938 by her friend Bill (who I think was female, but I'm not at all sure). Mom subsequently lent it to my Realtor's Mom, and now it has come back to me.
On one of the blank pages in the back of the book was this little sketch.
Isn't it sweet? I think that my Pop drew it, and that the people in it are my Mom, my older sister, and my older brother Johnny, who died before I was born. I love the smiles and the hairstyles -- and I think Pop put shoulder pads in Mom's dress. If this is indeed a sketch of them, it was probably done shortly before Pop shipped out during World War II -- probably 1942 or maybe 1943. I bet my older sister will remember it; I'm going to ask her about it the next time I see her.
It makes me smile. I love it.
