Super Bowl Weekend Love List

Yes, the Super Bowl is Sunday and I am lazily rooting for the Arizona Cardinals, mostly because they are the underdogs, but also because I cannot bring myself to root for a team that is from the same city as the Penguins. So, in honor of the Super Bowl, I present this week's Love List. I love: Rick Rolls, especially the one that the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade organizers pulled. This extremely interesting project from... Read more →

Ice Day

We had a grand total of about one inch of snow yesterday, slightly more than a dusting, but then the snow stopped and the freezing rain and sleet took over. When I peeked out of the window this morning, everything had nice shiny coating of ice. Not much, mind you, but enough that we had to beat on the sidewalk to break it up so that I could get to the car without breaking my... Read more →

Big Sister, Little Brother

I have always liked this old photograph of my grandmother and her brother, my Great-Uncle Earl. Gramma was born in 1883; Uncle Earl in 1890. Judging by her dress and her beautiful young face, I think she must have been about 16, making Uncle Earl about 9. Doesn't he look mischievous? I wouldn't be surprised if he had a frog in the pocket of those knickers. And what about her, with that sweet butterfly ornament... Read more →

Look Out, The Ax Is Falling

The layoffs finally happened at work yesterday. We'd been expecting them for months, but the last couple of weeks have been the worst. On Thursday the VP of our department came around "just to say hi" and to put his face in front of everyone. I did appreciate him coming around, but it is not something he ever did before, so it was kind of an early warning signal that the ax was swinging lower... Read more →

The Great Cupcake Quest

Today is Joe's birthday! I knew exactly what I wanted to get him. The inspiration came just the other day, when Joe went grocery shopping. He picked up a package of his favorite snacks, but! He left them in the grocery cart outside the store. Poor Joey! So, after work, I set out on my quest for these, in particular, the orange variety. Yes. Other people might scorn this delicious snack cake, preferring the upscale... Read more →

Hope Over Fear

"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility, a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task." Welcome, Mr. President. Read more →

A Birthday On The Edge

Yesterday as I was having lunch with Mom, I asked, "So, do you know what tomorrow is?" She thought about it, then said, "Sunday?" "Yes, but besides that -- what were doing 57 years ago tomorrow?" She thought about it again, then a sly smile spread over her face. "Happy birthday!" she said. "Thank you!" I said. "What do you remember about that day?" "I remember scrubbing the floor. Then I stood up and my... Read more →

Inauguration Love List

It's Friday and it's bitter cold. "Restructuring" is looming at my company. I have a fatty liver. (Like how I threw that in there?) I'm still coughing and snorking. I think I need a love list. I love: Rice with butter Flash's great diving goal against the Pens All the goals against the Pens The sun The first two seconds of going outside Cheratussin Hot showers Dove moisturizing body wash Using up every last cent...
