The Real Horror

Well.

Once again, a deranged man with an arsenal has murdered people. How many will it take before we stop sending thoughts and prayers and start determining how we can stop these terrorists?

And yes, I believe that these people are terrorists. They cause terror; their sole purpose is to kill as many people -- men, women, children -- as they can. I do not give a shit whether they are affiliated with a radical group. They are terrorists.

So. I have no wish to prevent law-abiding citizens from owning guns. I really don't. Some of the people that I love best are responsible gun owners. But there must be some way to prevent mentally ill people, criminals, pissed-off ex-employees,  violent racists, and any other motherfuckers from buying them.

Licensing? I'm in favor of that. You have to pass a test to get a license to drive a goddamn car; you should have to pass a test to get a license to own guns. Oh, and you should have to renew that license periodically, and have the license yanked if you fail. Maybe testing and licensing would weed out some of the terrorists. Maybe not. But you cannot dissuade me from this opinion. Don't try.

Background checks? I'm in favor of those, too. For God's sake, you have to pass a background check to get many jobs. Maybe thorough background checks with databases that are linked would weed out some of the terrorists. Maybe not. But you cannot dissuade me from this opinion. Don't try.

But apparently this country is not willing to do these things or anything else to try to prevent these kinds of killings, these murders, these acts of terror. Apparently we are willing to sacrifice people's lives and to tolerate these tragedies so that anyone can easily buy the tools of massacres.

That is the real horror.
